HP ENTERPRISE MESSAGING SOLUTION OFFERS
NEW MAIL-ENABLED APPLICATIONS
PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 27, 1992 -- Hewlett-Packard Company today
announced two mail-enabled applications for its standards-based
electronic-messaging solution. This announcement delivers on HP's
strategy to provide users with a choice of applications that use its
X.400, UNIX* system-based HP OpenMail server and messaging
infrastructure. The new applications for workflow and
calendar/scheduling make scheduling and the automation of business
processes easier in an organization.
Mail-enabled Workflow Automation
HP today announced immediate shipment of its object-oriented,
electronic-mail-enabled workflow-automation product, HP WorkRouter.
Along with the software, HP also is providing consulting and
implementation services through its Professional Services Organization
and selected client/server solution integrators.
With HP WorkRouter, simple workflows can be created by end users and
sophisticated workflows can be created by experienced developers. It
uses the concept of "intelligent folders" that can be routed through
the messaging network. The folders contain multimedia data objects,
user instructions, agent tasks* that automate the folder and its
contents, and fixed or dynamic routing slips.
The product is designed to support business-process automation for
increased productivity in an enterprise. Customers currently are using
HP WorkRouter for applications that help eliminate or streamline
processes that use paper, including review and approval.
HP WorkRouter runs in an object environment, making it easy to use; it
also provides agent-task capability for rapid application development.
Virtually any Microsoft(R) Windows application can be integrated into a
workflow, and HP WorkRouter supports both dynamic link library (DLL)
and dynamic data exchange (DDE).
Consulting services are supported by procedures and templates supplied
by the HP product division. HP consultants can help shorten process -
development time and ensure that customers take maximum advantage of
the product's features.
"The object-oriented, multimedia, task-automation capability combined
with well developed consulting services makes HP WorkRouter an
attractive tool for workflow automation," said Ronni Marshak of the
Patricia Seybold Group, in Boston.
HP WorkRouter is available for use with messaging services for HP 9000-
or HP 3000-based messaging networks.
Mail-enabled Calendar/Scheduler
In a related announcement, HP and Dexotek Canada Corp. said that the
Dexotek Unison time-management system, a mail-enabled application for
HP's electronic-messaging solution, now is available. Dexotek Unison is
an enterprisewide, client/server time-management system, specially
adapted for integration with the HP OpenMail directory of users.
Unison's distributed database of time-management information enables
users to maintain a personal calendar and to schedule meetings,
resources and events within a workgroup or throughout a corporation.
The Unison productivity tool includes to-do lists, repetitive
scheduling, attachment of meeting agendas and notes and free-time
searches for groups of people who are located anywhere in an
organization.
"The unprecedented, enterprisewide innovations of Unison are made
possible by the mail-enabling technology of HP OpenMail," said Ingrid
C. Pitchen, president of Dexotek.
HP Mail-enabler
All of the applications announced today, including the client user
agents, are achieved through the HP Openmail user agent layer an
application programming interface (API) that supports international and
adopted standard interfaces. Through this user agent layer, a growing
list of HP, Channel Partners and custom messaging applications can
exploit the rich functionality of the HP OpenMail server. As a result,
end users continue to work with familiar, best-in-class desktop
applications, while information technology departments provide
standards -based and scalable messaging services to support
corporatewide network communications.
Dexotek Canada Corp., founded in 1988, is a privately held
company based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Hewlett-Packard Company is an international manufacturer of
measurement and computation products and systems recognized for
